The Nagasaki local foods

With its diverse history of many different cultures coming together in one city, Nagasaki has several signature dishes.  Bring your appetite as Yoshi-san takes you on a food journey through the city where you will be able to sample some of the well known and loved local dishes.

Champon

Chanpon-Nagasaki’s signature dish. It is a noodle dish with Chinese roots.  Depending on your restaurant you will be treated to fried seafood, pork and vegetables in a rich pork and or chicken bone broth with noodles. This dish has traditionally been viewed as an inexpensive, healthy and delicious stomach filler.

Sara Udon

Sara Udon- the translation is "plate noodles". You will savor a mixture of meat and vegetables are placed atop a bed of crispy fried noodles.  Every restaurant has its own variation of this local dish.

Kakuni Manju

Kakuni Manju- Another dish with Chinese roots.  Enjoy a thick slice of pork belly placed in a soft bread bun. The meat is simmered low and slow in a tantalizing marinade made with soy sauce, dashi, sake, sugar and mirin to make the meat extra tender. Kakuni Manju is a food experience not to be missed.

Toruko Rice

Toruko Rice- A Western-inspired dish that pairs pilaf rice and spaghetti with a delicious deep fried pork cutlet topped with Japanese-style curry. This savory meal represents the meeting of The East and The West in the city of Nagasaki.
